Independent Drain Pans

NuClimate uses independent insulated drain pans in order to remove any condensation that may form on the valance unit coil. Drain pans extend past coil surface areas to guarantee any condensation forming on return bends or coil casing ends up in the drain pan. A single drain pan can be up to 10 feet in length. When longer distances must be covered double or triple drain pans are used (see figures below) The drain pan is fully cleanable and can be insulated on the interior or exterior as specified by the engineer. Closed cell interior drain pan insulation can be effective in minimizing sound from condensation dripping from the coil into the drain pan. Condensate drains are sloped at 1” per 10 feet and are set by the manufacturer to ensure thorough drainage.

The architectural valance cover and the drain pan are hinged to allow for easy access to valance unit internals.  The drain pan can be removed from the unit for cleaning and can easily be replaced.


Design Considerations

The application of a valance system is similar to that of any hydronic system.  First, the designer must establish the correct location for the valance system and the amount of space available.  This is done by establishing the wall-to-wall dimensions of the room.  In most cases, the valance unit should be applied against the outer wall of the room, high in the corner where the outer wall meets the ceiling.  The enclosure should run wall-to-wall when possible.  When a valance unit is not being designed wall to wall, end caps can be applied to hide internal components.  NuClimate recommends that the coil be 24” smaller than the overall wall length. This is the optimal length for allowing room for valves, flow balancing devices, and traps if required.  Although the coil could be larger, the designer must ensure room for the piping and accessories.  In selecting the correct coil size an engineer must compare the room loads to the output of the valance coil.  Each valance unit comes complete with a choice of a 5”, 7” 10”, 12.5” 15”, or 20” wide horizontal coil.  Available to all engineers is NuClimate’s software program which calculates cooling and heating capacities, water pressure drop through the coil, leaving water temperatures, and a number of other factors needed by an engineer for sizing the entire system.  NuClimate valance units are available for two and four pipe systems.  A two pipe system requires that the coil is either in cooling or heating mode.  To determine the left and right hand side an engineer would be standing in the occupied space looking at the enclosure.  In a four pipe system an engineer can provide heating in one room and cooling in another.

When higher capacities or improved air distribution is required an optional 12 volt DC fan assist module can be added to the base valance system.  The fan assist module is mounted into an induction baffle at the factory.  The fan assist induction module induces additional airflow through the coil to get higher capacities.  A 24 Volt AC regulator to 12 Volt DC is provided by factory for connecting power to the fan assist module.  The focused flow axial fan draws 0.6 watts at 0.05 amps and provides 50 CFM of airflow in the space.  These fans carry a six year warranty and are designed for 150,000 hours of bearing life.

When in heating mode, hot water circulates through the valance unit coil. As air passes across the coil it is heated, causing the air to rise by way of natural convection. The rising air heats up the ceiling and the outer aluminum enclosure of the valance unit which radiates heat down into the occupied space.

When in cooling mode, cold water circulates through the valance unit coil. As air passes across the coil it is cooled, causing the air to become more dense and drop towards the floor. As the cool air drops, warm air from the room circulates towards the ceiling and is induced through the valance unit coil. As air moves across the coil, the moisture in the air condenses on the fins of the coil. Condensation collects in the drain pan and is removed by the drainage system.
